Favorite Genres

If you’re a book lover like me, then you’ve probably read tons of books. Being a book blogger, also pushes reading up a notch. My love for books is one of the reasons I started blogging. As I’ve come to realize, after reading countless books, I’ve naturally gravitated toward certain genres.

There are so many reasons why people read books but I’ll point out a few that I can relate to:

 Knowledge
 Enjoyment
 Entertainment
 Escapism
 Education
 Relaxation
 Creativity
 Expertise
 Boredom

Whether it is for Knowledge or Entertainment, every reader has certain genres that they enjoy more than others. There are many sub-genres within the Fiction and Non-Fiction Genres. I only read Fiction for PURE ESCAPISM. My favorite sub-genres are genres within genres. Any book, YA or Adult with Fantasy or Paranormal elements is where I LOVE to LIVE in. I love genres like this because it’s left up to your imagination to live completely in the character’s world with no worries about the real world. Anything goes in this genre and I don’t have the urge to critique it and get caught up in applying the rules of the real world into the fantasy world.

I also love Historical Romance (Regency/Victorian). There’s something magical about being caught up in a whirlwind of balls, gowns, and rakes. *sigh* I’m just beginning to really delve into Contemporary novels. The ones that I’ve fallen in love with are more on the darker, grittier side. These books have a way of forcing me to acknowledge the characters and their struggles on their journey back into the light. Although, I’m not a big fan of this genre, I am more open to it now. One of the main reasons I’ve had such bad luck with this genre is my tendency to compare the books to real life. In the end, most of the books that I’ve read fall short in making a believer out of me.

So, what is/are your favorite genre(s)? Why?

  1. I am sooo into YA Dystopian novels. I absolutely love them. My second favorite is probably contemporary YA.

  2. I like you read to escape into new worlds. So I LOVE MG and YA Fantasy. I would read more adult fantasy but they tend to be so long and I have so many books I want to read. I've been enjoying paranormal & dystopian too.

I enjoy contemporary books when someone lends them to me or I win a book, but I don't buy them or reserve them at the library. If I didn't need to sleep, I might read more contemporary.

  3. I like books with strong romantic elements, not just romance novels but also a lot of YA contemp like Sarah Dessen and classics like Austen.

  4. I agree with you. My stand out genre is going to be dystopian. I'm all for standing up to a defunct government :) I also love post-apocalyptic. It's just so realistic that I get drawn in so easily. There's something so terrifying about a created world that parallels ours. And I really enjoy historical fiction. My favorite part is at the end where it talks about what's real or not. Love that.

  5. I love YA, magical-realism, literary fiction, classics and memoirs (typically medical narratives but also book memoirs). I also enjoy reading romances every now and then when I'm in the mood for something light and that can be read in a day so. Susan Elizabeth Phillips is my fave romance author. I love her Chicago Stars series.

  7. I really love Fantasy and have especially been into dystopian and urban fantasy lately. YA is great, but I also love some authors in the adult portion of that. And anything to do with fairy-tales is a must read. :)
