READING SLUMP WOES
Have you ever been on a reading high, where you hit the mark
on great books then out of nowhere find yourself slamming into a brick wall? Sounds familiar? It’s the dreadful reading
slump – oh the woes of being an avid reader.
In my case, I could read 4 to 5 starred books, 3 - 5 in a row then
hit a snag. It’s so frustrating when this happens because I end up picking up
at least 3 more books only to read the first chapter then put the book away
later until I’m in the mood. I’ve noticed when I hit my slumps; it’s when I’m in
a mood to read a particular genre. For instance, earlier this year, I was on a
roll – I started off with Golden Son
by Pierce Brown then I read I Dead of
Winter by Kresley Cole. Notice the similarities? These books both have similar elements: Unique stories, great world building, unforgettable characters, and dark undertones. So, it
made since for me to want to keep the love going. When I couldn’t find any
other books that met these criteria, what did I do?
I went back to the basics. What I mean by this is, what made
me love reading in the first place? There are books that capture your heart and
will forever be remembered. You can read these books over and over again and
because of this I always go back to one of my unforgettable reads to pull me
out of my slump.
Here are my go to books when I’m
in a slump: It’s a weird mix but they work for me.
Whitney My Love by Judith McNaught – this was one of my first historical romance reads (I’m a supernatural girl)
Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning - I'm obsessed with this series
Poison Study, (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder - I love the world building and unforgettable characters
Beautiful Disaster (Disaster, #1) by Jamie McGuire - my first New Adult - you always remember your first
Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost - this book has everything that I love when it comes to this genre
I'm just a girl with a crazy book obsession.
