Waiting on Wednesday: The Iron Knight by Julie Kagawa

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

THE IRON KNIGHT (Iron Fey #4) by Julie Kagawa
Pub. Date: October 2011
Publisher: Harlequin
Format: Paperback, 304pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Series: Iron Fey Series
Ash, former prince of the Winter Court, gave up everything. His title, his home, even his vow of loyalty. All for a girl… and all for nothing.

Unless he can earn a soul.

To cold, emotionless faery prince Ash, love was a weakness for mortals and fools. His own love had died a horrible death, killing any gentler feelings the Winter prince might have had. Or so he thought.

Then Meghan Chase—a half human, half fey slip of a girl— smashed through his barricades, binding him to her irrevocably with his oath to be her knight. And when all of Faery nearly fell to the Iron fey, she severed their bond to save his life. Meghan is now the Iron Queen, ruler of a realm where no Winter or Summer fey can survive.

With the (unwelcome) company of his archrival, Summer Court prankster Puck, and the infuriating cait sith Grimalkin, Ash begins a journey he is bound to see through to its end— a quest to find a way to honor his solemn vow to stand by Meghan’s side.

To survive in the Iron realm, Ash must have a soul and a mortal body. But the tests he must face to earn these things are impossible. At least, no one has ever passed to tell the tale.

And then Ash learns something that changes everything. A truth that turns reality upside down, challenges his darkest beliefs and shows him that, sometimes, it takes more than courage to make the ultimate sacrifice
The Iron Fey Series is one of my favorite YA series. The characters are outstanding and I'm constantly surprised by the twists and turns that this series takes. I really can't get enough of Ash, Puck, and Grim. This series has one of the best casts.

Book Chatter (3): Love at First Sight or Budding Relationship

Pull up a chair, relax, and let’s discuss the wonderful world of books.

Do you enjoy discussing anything and everything pertaining to books? YES!

Well, you’ve come to the right place. Every week, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on various book topics and offering prizes that pertain to the topic at hand. That’s not all – You will get to choose the weekly topic by voting on which topic to discuss for the following week. You will also be able to suggest topics by clicking on this FORM.

Love at First Sight or Budding Relationship

Ah LOVE! How I adore thee in my novels. There are moments when these relationships take my breath away when I least expect it. Whether they’re soul mates torn apart or new love on the rise, it does not matter to me as long as I continue to swoon…

I’m a big believer that LOVE conquers all, especially when it comes to books with romantic elements. The problem that I’m running into now is how these romantic relationships are developed. From the moment that we are introduced to the romantic interest in a book, there’s a possibility that we could fall utterly head over heels or crave more of the interactions between the couples as the story progresses. All it takes is a combination of a glance, an action, a description, perfect dialogue, or a beautiful setting, that could lead to immediate fireworks OR a complete and utter FAIL of chemistry between the characters. I guess depending on the various combinations, it could be HIT or MISS.

I’m sure there are plenty of factors in how we choose which we prefer. For instance, if it’s a young-adult book, I prefer the budding relationship. After all, the characters are young and who really knows what they want in high school. The exception to this is any young-adult, urban fantasy, or paranormal romance books with supernatural elements involving reincarnation, soul mates, or immortality. I guess if you’re going to live forever then it doesn’t matter that your 17 or 18.

Whether you prefer instant attraction or an intoxicating courtship, I believe we can all agree that there’s a right recipe and a wrong one. When done right, I don’t have a preference of one over the other. When done wrong, I find the relationship rushed or unrealistic. If I get the preconception that the relationship is unbelievable, then I lose all interest in the romance between the characters.

Here are some passages of love at first sight & a budding relationship that I absolutely adored.

Love at first sight
(Fallen by Lauren Kate - pg.40 HC)

She glanced at Daniel. He took his glasses off and slid them inside his jacket, then turned to look at her.

His gaze caught hers, and Luce watched as his eyes widened and then quickly narrowed in what looked like surprise. But no—it was more than that. When Daniel’s eyes held hers, her breath caught in her throat. She recognized him from somewhere.

But she would have remembered meeting someone like him. She would have remembered feeling as absolutely shaken up as she did right now.

She realized they were still locking eyes when Daniel flashed her a smile. A jet of warmth shot through her and she had to grip the bench for support. She felt her lips pull up in a smile back at him, but then he raised his hand in the air.

And flipped her off.

Luce gasped and dropped her eyes.

I was enraptured from the moment Luce began describing Daniel and when their eyes locked, that was all she wrote. I was hooked! Gotta love the soul mates angle in any story!

Budding Relationship
(Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning - pgs. 37-38 HC)

She looked beyond me, over my shoulder, and uttered a single word like a benediction. “Jericho.”

“Jericho?” I echoed, not following. “You mean the ancient city?”

“Jericho Barrons,” a rich, cultured male voice said behind me. “And you are?” Not an Irish accent. No idea what kind of accent it was, though.

I turned, with my name perched on the tip of my tongue, but it didn’t make it out. No wonder Fiona had said his name like that. I gave myself a brisk inward shake and stuck out my hand. “MacKayla, but most people call me Mac.”

“Have you a surname, MacKayla?” He pressed my knuckles briefly to his lips and released my hand. My skin tingled where his mouth had been.

Was it my imagination or was his gaze predatory? I was afraid I was getting a little paranoid. It had been a long, odd day after an odder night. Ashford Journal headlines were beginning to form in my mind: Second Lane Sister Meets with Foul Play in Dublin Bookshop. “Just Mac is fine,” I evaded.

“And what do you know of this shi-sadu, just Mac?”

“Nothing. That’s why I was asking. What is it?”

“I have no idea,” he said. “Where did you hear of it?”

“Can’t remember. Why do you care?”

He crossed his arms. I crossed mine too. Why were these people lying to me? What in the world was this thing I was asking about?

He studied me with his predator’s gaze, assessing me from head to toe. I studied him back. He didn’t just occupy space; he saturated it. The room had been full of books before, now it was full of him. About thirty, six foot two or three, he had dark hair, golden skin, and dark eyes. His features were strong, chiseled. I couldn’t pinpoint his nationality any more than I could his accent; some kind of European crossed with Old World Mediterranean or maybe an ancestor with dark Gypsy blood. He wore an elegant, dark gray Italian suit, a crisp white shirt, and a muted patterned tie. He wasn’t handsome. That was too calm a word. He was intensely masculine. He was sexual. He attracted. There was an omnipresent carnality about him, in his dark eyes, in his full mouth, in the way he stood. He was the kind of man I wouldn’t flirt with in a million years.

Phew…I would have just started with the above paragraph but I wanted to capture the first moment these two saw each other. It's like you just knew their meeting was of historic proportions. Fans of this series had to endure a long wait for these two to come to their senses but the journey was worthwhile. These two are probably my favorite couple of all-time in a paranormal series.

Here’s a list of some of my current favorite couples in no particular order (released over the past 5 yrs):
SN: As you can tell, the majority of them are in Series

Sam & Grace (The Wolves of Mercy Falls by Maggie Stiefvater)
Mac & Jericho (The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning)
Cat & Bones (The Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost)
Rose & Dimitri (Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead)
Anna & Étienne (Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins)
Nora & Patch (Hush, Hush Series by Becca Fitzpatrick)
Lennie & Joey (The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson)
Clare & Jace (The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare)
Kate & Curran (Kate Daniel Series by Ilona Andrews)
Elena & Raphael (Guild Hunter Series by Nalini Singh)
Clara & Tucker (Unearthly Series by Cynthia Hand)
Merit & Ethan (Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neill)
Grace & Daniel (Dark Divine Series by Bree Despain)
Luce & Daniel (Fallen Series by Lauren Kate)
Meagan & Ash (Iron Fey Series by Julie Kagawa)
Faythe & Mark (Shifters Series by Rachel Vincent)
Yelena & Valek (Magic Study Series by Maria Snyder)
Bella & Edward (Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer)

I’m sure I’m missing some (BDB Series, Highlander Series, etc. These are the ones that stand out to me)…

I know that we all have favorite romance novels or favorite couples but what do you think are the ingredients that separate a good romance from an unforgettable romance? How do the two play a role in your preferences?

Waiting on Wednesday: Vanish by Sophie Jordan

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

VANISH (Firelight #2) by Sophie Jordan
Pub. Date: September 2011
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers
Format: Hardcover , 304pp
Age Range: 12 and up
To save the life of the boy she loves, Jacinda did the unthinkable: She betrayed the most closely-guarded secret of her kind. Now she must return to the protection of her pride knowing she might never see Will again—and worse, that because his mind has been shaded, Will’s memories of that fateful night and why she had to flee are gone.

Back home, Jacinda is greeted with hostility and must work to prove her loyalty for both her sake and her family’s. Among the few who will even talk to her are Cassian, the pride’s heir apparent who has always wanted her, and her sister, Tamra, who has been forever changed by a twist of fate. Jacinda knows that she should forget Will and move on—that if he managed to remember and keep his promise to find her, it would only endanger them both. Yet she clings to the hope that someday they will be together again. When the chance arrives to follow her heart, will she risk everything for love?

In bestselling author Sophie Jordan’s dramatic follow-up to Firelight, forbidden love burns brighter than ever.
FIRELIGHT was one of my favorite reads of 2010. It has dragons, which I don't see much of in my paranormal reads. The characters are great and it has what I love in my books, a love triangle. *Squeals*

Review: Love Story by Jennifer Echols

LOVE STORY by Jennifer Echols
Pub. Date: July 2011
Publisher: Gallery/MTV Books
Format: Paperback , 256pp
Source: Publisher
SHE’S WRITING ABOUT HIM. HE’S WRITING ABOUT HER. AND EVERYBODY IS READING BETWEEN THE LINES.

For Erin Blackwell, majoring in creative writing at the New York City college of her dreams is more than a chance to fulfill her ambitions—it’s her ticket away from the tragic memories that shadow her family’s racehorse farm in Kentucky. But when she refuses to major in business and take over the farm herself someday, her grandmother gives Erin’s college tuition and promised inheritance to their maddeningly handsome stable boy, Hunter Allen. Now Erin has to win an internship and work late nights at a local coffee shop to make her own dreams a reality. She should despise Hunter . . . so why does he sneak into her thoughts as the hero of her latest writing assignment?

Then, on the day she’s sharing that assignment with her class, Hunter walks in. He’s joining her class. And after he reads about himself in her story, her private fantasies about him must be painfully clear. She only hopes to persuade him not to reveal her secret to everyone else. But Hunter devises his own creative revenge, writing sexy stories that drive the whole class wild with curiosity and fill Erin’s heart with longing. Now she’s not just imagining what might have been. She’s writing a whole new ending for her romance with Hunter . . . except this story could come true.
Mini Review
This book took me by surprise. I know it’s a Jennifer Echols book right? I should not be surprised. But, this book was so different. This book immediately captured my attention. The opening of the book starts off with a story that Erin has written for her creative writing class and I was so into it that I didn’t want it to end. All I could think about is how Jennifer should write a historical romance novel. I would definitely buy it. She could write any type of story and I would buy it.

What I enjoyed the most about LOVE STORY was the premise. Here you have a creative writing class with characters writing about each other and through their stories, you learn more and more about them. The fact that some of the stories were quite hot was a plus too. One thing that I can say is that Jennifer writes the best relationships with great male leads. I don’t know how you cannot fall in love with her characters.

I look forward to reading anything this author writes and that says a lot. If you’re huge Echols fan like me then you won’t be disappointed with LOVE STORY.

Book Chatter (2): Cliffhanger Endings

Pull up a chair, relax, and let’s discuss the wonderful world of books.

Do you enjoy discussing anything and everything pertaining to books? YES!

Well, you’ve come to the right place. Every week, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on various book topics and offering prizes that pertain to the topic at hand. That’s not all – You will get to choose the weekly topic by voting on which topic to discuss for the following week. You will also be able to suggest topics by clicking on this FORM.

Cliffhanger Endings...

Cliffhanger – well there’s a word I love to hate.  So let’s just define the bane of my existence in book series:  An ending to an episode of a serial drama that leaves the audience in suspense.

Well, for starters, if I could redefine this word and put an action to it, I would say: Readers be forewarned – due to the necessary evil of this tool, you may end up pulling out your hair or throwing your book across the room. Oh, and let’s not forget that you'll more than likely have to wait a whole year to see what happens next.

OK. So, a lot of writers use this plot device in their series. WHY? Will readers who enjoyed the book be scrambling around pre-ordering the next installment to boost revenue? Is it just part of the necessary progression of the series? Who knows and I guess with that the plot thickens.

I for one love book series. I become emotionally involved in the characters lives and it’s hard to say goodbye to these characters at the end of the book. If it's a series, I have more books with my favorite characters. Whoot! BUT, and that’s a big one – I also have to deal with the waiting and YES the suspense of what’s going to happen next, especially if a major character gets killed in the final few pages of the book. What is a girl to do?

One series comes to mind when I think of cliffhanger endings. Yes, there are a lot of series with them but this one in particular takes the cake. I’m positively sure that readers of this series will agree with me. Drum Roll Please…THE FEVER SERIES by Karen Marie Moning.

Let me break it down for you:
  • There are 5 books in this series
  • Every last book has a cliffhanger (except the last but that’s debatable)
  • I have never been more frustrated or obsessed by a book series in my life
  • These cliffhangers give you no choice – Do not past go, Do not collect $200 (unless your spending it on these books and merchandise related to the series) Yep – Guilty as charged.
  • You can scream, shout, or throw the book but you will be starving for that next glimpse
Here’s a list of cliffhanger books that I’ve recently read (Although some may not end on a shocking note, but they leave you with a taste or yearning of things to come):

City of Fallen Angels (The Mortal Instruments, #4) by Cassandra Clare
The Lost Saint (The Dark Divine, #2) by Bree Despain
Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver
Crescendo (Hush, Hush, #2) by Becca Fitzpatrick)
Hard Bitten (Chicagoland Vampires, #4) by Chloe Neill

I’m sure there are plenty of more…

Well that’s it in a nutshell. Whether you love it or hate it, this plot device definitely makes you want more. Soooo….

How do you feel about cliffhanger endings?  What are some of your favorite books/series that have cliffhanger endings?

Waiting on Wednesday: Hallowed by Cynthia Hand

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

HALLOWED (Unearthly #2) by Cynthia Hand
Pub. Date: January 2012
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers
Format: Hardcover , 320pp
Age Range: 12 and up
For months part-angel Clara Gardner trained to face the raging forest fire from her visions and rescue the alluring and mysterious Christian Prescott from the blaze. But nothing could prepare her for the fateful decisions she would be forced to make that day, or the startling revelation that her purpose—the task she was put on earth to accomplish—is not as straightforward as she thought. Now, torn between her increasingly complicated feelings for Christian and her love for her boyfriend, Tucker, Clara struggles to make sense of what she was supposed to do the day of the fire. And, as she is drawn further into the world of part angels and the growing conflict between White Wings and Black Wings, Clara learns of the terrifying new reality that she must face: Someone close to her will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.

Described by Richelle Mead as “utterly captivating,” Unearthly received outstanding reviews, garnered accolades from New York Times bestselling authors, and was named an Indie Next Pick. In this heart-wrenching sequel, Cynthia Hand expertly captures the all-consuming joy of first love—and the agony of loss. This beautifully woven tale will appeal to fans of Lauren Kate, Becca Fitzpatrick, and Aprilynne Pike.

With all of my favorite series ending this year, Unearthly started a new craving for me. It had all of the elements that I love in a book and I can't wait to see what rollercoaster ride the characters will have to go on in this book. Plus, I'm crazy about Tucker!

Review: Sometimes It Happens by Lauren Barnholdt

SOMETIMES IT HAPPENS by Lauren Barnholdt
Pub. Date: July 2011
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Format: Hardcover , 320pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Source: Publisher ARC
On the last day of her junior year, Hannah's boyfriend Ryan dumped her. Facing a summer of loneliness, Hannah turns to her best friend Ava for comfort. Ava does what BFFs do: she stays by Hannah's side...until it's time for Ava to head up to Maine for the summer. Also left behind is Ava's boyfriend, Noah, who's such a great guy he gets Hannah a job at the diner he waits tables at. Slowly, Hannah comes out of her funk thanks to Noah's good conversation and their fun times at the diner. But things get complicated when their friendship turns into attraction—and one night, into a passionate kiss. The novel opens on the first day of senior year; the day Hannah is going to see Ava, Ryan, and Noah all in one place. Over the course of the day secrets and betrayals are revealed, and alliances are broken and reformed. In the end, everyone is paired up once again, but not the way you might think...

Mini Review
Talk about a stressful first day back to school as a senior - drama, drama, drama, and more drama. That pretty much sums up this book. I know we’ve all had some type of drama in high school but Hannah, the poor girl is coming unhinged by the minutes. First she gets an eye full of her boyfriend’s sleaziness, and then she has to try and deal with the fallout, plus her best friend, whom she’s been planning to spend the summer with bails on her. What is a girl to do? Fall for said best friend’s beau. Yep, you got it.

Barnholdt takes us through Hannah’s first day back at school as a senior as she waits for her day to come crashing down around her while backtracking through her last day of junior year and her summer of possibilities. I think Hannah’s growth over the summer did her some good to be quite honest. She seemed timid to me but by the end of the book, she stood up for herself and took control of her life even though she had to betray her best friend to do it. Well, it just as the book says – Sometimes It Happens.

Book Chatter (1): Do Good Guys Finish Last?

Pull up a chair, relax, and let’s discuss the wonderful world of books.

Do you enjoy discussing anything and everything pertaining to books? YES!

Well, you’ve come to the right place. Every week, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on various book topics and offering prizes that pertain to the topic at hand. That’s not all – You will get to choose the weekly topic by voting on which topic to discuss for the following week. You will also be able to suggest topics by clicking on this FORM.

Do Good Guys Always Finish Last?

I know you’re probably familiar with the quote, “Nice guys finish last.” This could be attributed to how the fairer sex envisions her ideal romantic interest. Attributes that I would associate with a nice guy entails someone who’s caring, avoids confrontation, he’s not afraid to be expressive, and he’s not averse to commitment. These traits sound dreamy right? Well, sometimes you get the other end of the spectrum whereas these traits can seem more negative. Some may believe that the “nice guy” is perceived as boring, timid, or insecure.

Personally, I relish reading books that revolve around some type of romance whether it is paranormal, contemporary or etc. With any book that has this element; readers may differentiate on their preference of the romantic interest. I’ve been reading a lot of books that involve more than one romantic interest. Most readers will have a preference of one over the other. There is a current preconception of:

Good BoyBad Boy
Polite
Independent
Dependable Confident
RespectfulMysterious
Honorable
Not too available
Thoughtful
Don't tolerate BS
Sense of humor Decisive and doesn’t worry about offending others

Although some readers may feel as though these attributes can go both ways, I would gather that books involving more than one romantic interest would connect these traits to one or the other in some form or fashion.

I tend to find myself falling for the “bad boys” per say. That doesn’t always mean that they come out on top by the end of the novel or series but it’s always interesting to see what his chances are. Case in point, take these two series in particular:

The Mortal Instruments Series
There are two romantic interests for main protagonist Clary Fray.

Simon Lewis
  • loyal and would do anything for her.
  • best friend for about 10 years and he is also in love with her
  • nice caring
  • smart
  • funny
  • cool
  • witty
 Jace Wayland
  • moves to the beat of his own drums
  • arrogant
  • conceited
  • hides his emotions
  • doesn't play by the rules
  • enjoys danger
  • sarcastic
I could say that Simon fits the good boy traits while Jace fits the bad boy traits perfectly. In this series, I was all for Jace. It was kind of hard for me not to root for him.

The Hunger Games Series
There are two romantic interests for main protagonist Katniss Everdeen.

Gale Hawthorne
  • friends with katniss since she was 12
  • devoted to his family and protective of Katniss and her family
  • passionate about his beliefs of the Capitol
  • bit of a temper
  • has a steady presence & offers security
  • questions everything
 Peeta Mellark
  • protective and willing to go to extremes to keep Katniss alive.
  • has a likable personality
  • he is very selfless, and willing to do anything to protect Katniss.
  • kind
  • steady
  • charismatic
With each of these guys, their strengths are different. So, as I read this series, I looked at who I thought would be a better match for Katniss. Well, I think Gale could fit either trait but for readers who are familiar with this series, you know who comes out on top. By the way, I was Team Gale. *Runs, ducks, and hides*

There are also some extreme cases where Teams are formed: In almost every case, one of the characters competing for the heart of the female love interest fits the good boy/bad boy attributes.

Team Peeta vs Team Gale
Team Edward vs Team Jacob
Team Dimitri vs Team Adrian
Team Stefan vs Team Damon
Team Ash vs Team Puck

You get the point.

So this comes back to the question: Do good guys always finish last?

Goodbyes are so hard...

I have decided to retire Monday Madness. This week’s feature concludes Monday Madness. MM has been running for a little over a year and a half and I feel as though it’s time for a change. It will be missed but I hope that my new feature will be just as fun and informative for my readers.

WHAT’S COMING?

I have a new feature that I will be starting called BOOK CHATTER.

During Book Chatter, I will be posting topics pertaining to everything book related on Mondays. There will also be prizes for each topic plus you will get to vote on and suggest topics you want discussed for this feature.

The first Book Chatter topic is DO GOOD GUYS ALWAYS FINISH LAST? This topic will start off this feature Monday, July 11, 2011. Polls will open starting Friday July 8 – Tuesday July 12. There will be at least 4 topics to vote on. The one with the most votes is the one that I will feature for the next Book Chatter topic. If there's a tie, I will randomly pick one.

Here’s the breakdown:

Voting: Friday – Tuesday (topics will cycle off as they are picked)

Every Monday = Highest vote getter will be the next Book Chatter Topic

I welcome any suggestions – there will be a form on each Book Chatter Topic for suggestions.
