I'm honored to have Lauren Oliver on my blog today where she will answer questions about her current novel.
Lauren Oliver was previously an editorial assistant at a publishing company in New York. A graduate of the University of Chicago and the MFA Program at New York University, she is now a full-time writer. She divides her time between Brooklyn, New York, and anywhere her friends will let her crash on their sofas. She enjoys reading, writing, cooking, running, dancing, and yes, long walks on the beach (or, more practically, along New York City streets).
Her first book, Before I Fall, was published in March 2010 by HarperCollins. It was a New York Times Bestseller. Please visit her on the web at http://www.laurenoliverbooks.com/.
DELIRIUM, her current novel, a first in a trilogy is in a store near you!
What was your favorite aspect about writing DELIRIUM?
I had a lot of fun building the world, and thinking about the kind of educational, literary, social, political, and religious structures that would have to be in place in order for a world without love to function. It was actually really interesting to write about such a repressive society; we’re so removed from that in western culture, although it is of course a reality in many parts of the world.
DELIRIUM is different from your previous novel, BEFORE I FALL (Which I absolutely loved). Was it harder to write one book over the other? If so, please explain?
I think every book is hard in a different way. In Before I Fall I was able to draw more fully from my own experiences and memories of high school, but it was difficult to evoke a main character that is so unsympathetic at the beginning, and then put her through the ringer. Lena and her world were less familiar to me, of course, but actually I found that quite freeing.
If you could pick any actress/actor to play the roles of Lena & Alex, who would you pick?
Oh, man! I don’t really ever see movies, so I have no idea who’s even out there. I would want Lena to look a little curvier, though. She’s not supposed to be a stick! She’s a normal seventeen-year-old girl, not a supermodel-in-training.
Have you received any feedback from any of your books that made you tear up? Can you share any details with your readers?
All the time, actually. I’m kind of a crybaby. People write to me all the time and tell me that Before I Fall helped them connect with their families, or made them want to live their lives more meaningfully. One girl told me it got her through a period during which she was feeling suicidal. There is of course no higher compliment, no impact more meaningful, than that.
What can readers look forward to next from you and your books?
Well, Delirium is the first book in a trilogy, so they can look forward to its sequel, PANDEMONIUM, which will be released in February 2012. And I’ve also started writing middle-grade fiction, which I’m really, really excited about. My first middle-grade book is called LIESL AND PO and it will be released in Fall 2011
Thanks for stopping by Lauren!
