GOBLINS

Yep. In this age of handsome, yearning vampires and hunky, shirtless werewolves, I wrote a book about…goblins. Are there sexy beasts in Tyger Tyger? Oh, yes. And love, and danger, and courage, and much, much more…but I wasn’t searching for the next Big Thing, or casting about for a creature group which had gone largely un-exploited in the current paranormal pandemonium when I wrote Tyger Tyger.

I was remembering a goblin that crept out of the dark and slipped her paw into my hand. It happened when I was just a child. The creature’s name was Lina, and she came to life in a book by George MacDonald.

Lina was a dog–like creature with green eyes lit by amber fire, and a huge mouth with icicle–like teeth. Curdie, the hero of the story, could feel the real hand of any creature inside its flesh glove, and when Lina put her paw in his hand: “a shudder, as of terrified delight, ran through him… instead of the paw of a dog, such as it seemed to his eyes, he clasped in his great mining fist the soft, neat little hand of a child! The green eyes stared at him with their yellow light, and the mouth was turned up toward him with its constant half grin; but here was the child's hand!”

When I read those lines I felt it. I felt the child’s hand, and I knew I wanted to pull a child out of a goblin one day. That was the moment Tyger Tyger started growing inside me. Through the years, many stories, poems, myths and legends lent elements to the growing story: Tam Lin, the story of girl who must muster all her courage to save her love who has been taken by the Sidhe; The Lords of the Grey and White Castles, a fairytale by Francis Brown, Ireland’s blind storyteller; and even a hint of the goblin from Harold Monro’s poem, Overheard on a Salt Marsh:

Many reviewers have commented that Tyger Tyger is different from anything they have read in the market lately. It is.

But…different can be good.

Review: Tyger Tyger by Kersten Hamilton

TYGER TYGER by Kersten Hamilton
Pub. Date: November 2010
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Format: Hardcover , 320pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Source: Publisher

Teagan Wylltson's best friend, Abby, dreams that horrifying creatures--goblins, shape-shifters, and beings of unearthly beauty but terrible cruelty--are hunting Teagan. Abby is always coming up with crazy stuff, though, so Teagan isn't worried. Her life isn't in danger. In fact, it's perfect. She's on track for a college scholarship. She has a great job. She's focused on school, work, and her future. No boys, no heartaches, no problems.

Until Finn Mac Cumhaill arrives. Finn's a bit on the unearthly beautiful side himself. He has a killer accent and a knee-weakening smile. And either he's crazy or he's been haunting Abby's dreams, because he's talking about goblins, too . . . and about being The Mac Cumhaill, born to fight all goblin-kind. Finn knows a thing or two about fighting. Which is a very good thing, because this time, Abby's right. The goblins are coming.

TYGER TYGER begs for you to dive in and explore the wonders of Irish folklore flowing within the pages.

When I first read the synopsis of this book, I knew I was in for a great adventure filled with danger and goblins. I’ve not read too many books dealing with goblins but Kersten’s world building and Celtic mythology had me sold. I absolutely adore the fantasy genre and when it’s done right, I find myself wanting to immerse myself deeper into the world that was created. Kersten’s TYGER TYGER did that for me.

The characters in this book are well crafted. Teagan, the main protagonist is so level-headed for her age. While it doesn’t seem like she has a care in the world at the start of the book, things soon go awry when mysterious and self-assured Finn steps onto the scene. Talk about swoon worthy – he totally had me wrapped around his every word and movements. I wanted to know more about him. When Teagan finally realizes the imminent danger surrounding her loved ones, I had a hard time putting this book down. I enjoyed following along as Teagan and Finn teamed up to save her family from the evil goblins.

This book is a great start to the Goblin Wars Series. It’s fresh in a market saturated with werewolves and vampires. But ultimately it’s the world building and folklore that stands out in this book. Kersten’s imaginative writing is sure to grab readers who are looking for something different. I know I can’t wait to see what dangers the characters will be faced with in the next installment.

Sensational 7 Q & A with Kersten Hamilton (Author of Tyger Tyger)!

Have you ever wanted to know what it would be like to hang out with your favorite author(s)? In an attempt to get a better understanding of authors, my Sensational Seven Q & A takes a closer or more personal look at these authors to give you a glimpse of the personalities behind the writing of your favorite books.

“Talent alone cannot make a writer. There must be a man behind the book; a personality which, by birth and quality, is pledged to the doctrines there set forth, and which exists to see and state things so, and not otherwise.” By Ralph Waldo Emerson

Kersten Hamilton is a prolific children's writer known for her fast-paced, dramatic storylines. She is the author of twenty-four books for children and works with the house church movement in her home town of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

If you were given a chance to travel back in time, what year or place would you go / Why?
I would travel back in time 200 million years into the Jurassic, and live among the dinosaurs the way Jane Goodall lived among the apes—because I would love to study the beasts.

Describe your novel in seven words or less?
Epic. Celtic mythology, urban fantasy, and romance!

Please share with us about your favorite book and fictional crush to date?
I couldn’t possibly choose a favorite book. It changes at the speed of thought, which is only slightly less than the speed of light! Before I could type the title, it would have changed.

But literary crush I can do. I once took a test to find out which of the characters from Harry Potter I should marry—and it turned out that I should marry the Weasley twins. Both of them. At once. And, if you took Fred and George and put them in a blender, you could come up with something remarkably like my husband Mark. Yep. I would be safe in saying that Fred/George is my literary crush!

If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be / Why?
Reepicheep from Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Last Battle, by C.S. Lewis, NOT the one from the movie. I have always felt a great kinship with that mouse.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play thelead role as you/ Why?
Johnny Depp. Dustin Hoffman could have done it at one time, but he has grown a teeny bit too crotchety to play the part of Kersten Hamilton.

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be – please explain?
"I Feer a Dere”

Because that is the first line of the first poem I ever wrote. I was six years old, and living in the wilds of Alaska. Even then, I knew I wanted to be a writer. (In retrospect, it would have been more sensible to fear a bear or a mountain lion, but I was reaching for the stars. I wanted rhyme.) I Feer a Dere would be the story of my struggle with dysgraphia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dysgraphia and achieving my dream in spite of it.

How would you describe yourself/life in seven words?
Lucky to be alive, all things considered.

Bonus:

**Is there any additional info you would like to share with your readers about what’s next for you and your books?**
Yes! I am just putting the finishing touches on In the Forests of the Night, book two of Goblin Wars. It is darker, scarier, and the stakes are much higher for Tea and Finn. I am loving these characters. :)

Thanks for stopping by Kersten!

Where have I been? I need your feedback!

Yes, I'm still alive! This month is nanowrimo and I've been very busy. I only have a few Monday Madness Features set up for this month so that I can focus on nano. I do have some reviews that I will be posting on some books that have been creating a lot of buzz.

I've also been thinking about changing up my Monday Madness Feature from every week to every other week. Why? This will allow me to post more reviews, guest posts etc. of other upcoming novels.

So my questions to you are:

Do you like the Monday Madness Features? If so, do you enjoy having a book featured every week?

Do you like the Sensational 7 Author Q & A? Should I keep the questions the same or change them up for next year?

If so, what questions would you like to know about some of your favorite authors that gives you insight into the personality behind the writer?

I love this feature but if you have any suggestions that will make it better, feel free to comment.
