Review: StarCrossed by Elizabeth C. Bunce

STARCROSSED by Elizabeth C. Bunce
Pub. Date: October 2010
Publisher: Scholastic, Inc.
Format: Hardcover, 368pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Source: Publisher
16-year-old Digger thrives as a spy & sneak-thief among the feuding religious factions of Gerse. But when a routine job goes horribly wrong and her partner & lover Tegen is killed, she disguises herself in a group of young nobles & sneaks out of the city. Accepted as a lady-in-waiting at the stronghold of the powerful Nemair, she finds new peace & friendship (*and* some new targets). But when an old client from the city comes to the castle, she realizes her hosts may be planning the ultimate uprising against the king - & rather than true peace, she may be at the heart of the rebellion.
STARCROSSED lured me into dangerous webs of Digger's life as she ried to outrun the Greenmen (temple guards of the Goddess Celys but they report directly to the King) after a successful job of retrieving important letters from the King's secretary. As with any fantasy novel, STARCROSSED has plenty of important characters and places that are uniquely tied to the plotline which had me trying to wrap my head around each of the character’s motives and beliefs while trying to fit the puzzle pieces together to uncover hidden secrets. As I was reading along, I decided to write out the names and places so I would have the spelling correct, then my list started to look like a glossary. But don’t fret! The book has a Lexicon of terms in the back which is very helpful if you have problems following along.

STARCROSSED has a wide range of personalities but the main heroine, Digger is one of those characters you can't help but like. She's led an interesting and danger filled life as a thief. Her unique magical skill has made her a valuable asset in the streets of Gerse. Through her eyes, I experienced firsthand the dangers that shroud her life. She's brave and she’s always looking for the next priceless commodity or escape route which had me laughing plenty of times at how her mind works. If I had to sum Digger up, I'd say: She’s trapped within a chain of lies and secrets so complex that she’s beginning to find out it isn’t as easy as her skill at picking locks. Another character that kept me guessing was Dual. I wanted to know, what he had up his sleeve. I also wanted to know what he was hiding and what his ultimate goal was for being at the Nemair’s. The whole world that Bunce created was mysteriously intriguing which only lured me further and further into STARCROSSED’s world of magic, power, politics, and secrets.

The whole world of Llyvaraneth, from its lands to the politics, and the people's beliefs of their Gods & Goddesses were quite captivating. I didn't want to put this book down as I followed along as Digger masqueraded as a lady's maid while trying to escape the Greenmen. You never knew what secret was going to be uncovered. STARCROSSED is a well-written novel and I can't wait to see what the sequel has in store for Digger.

Sensational 7 Q & A with Elizabeth C. Bunce (Author of StarCrossed)!

Have you ever wanted to know what it would be like to hang out with your favorite author(s)? In an attempt to get a better understanding of authors, my Sensational Seven Q & A takes a closer or more personal look at these authors to give you a glimpse of the personalities behind the writing of your favorite books.

“Talent alone cannot make a writer. There must be a man behind the book; a personality which, by birth and quality, is pledged to the doctrines there set forth, and which exists to see and state things so, and not otherwise.” By Ralph Waldo Emerson

Elizabeth C. Bunce won the William C. Morris YA Debut Award and an ALA Notable citation for her novel A Curse Dark as Gold. She lives near Kansas City, Missouri, and maintains a web presence at www.elizabethcbunce.com.

STARCROSSED hits shelves October 1, 2010

If you were given a chance to travel back in time, what year or place would you go / Why?
I never know how to answer this! The most ordinary and mundane things come to mind: 1991 to see "Dead Again" for the first time in the theater, or 2001 to relive the puppyhood of my dogs, which passed far too quickly! A more exciting and intellectual answer would probably be "The ancient civilizations of Greece, Egypt, or the Maya." But if I truly had the opportunity, I think I would dip back to February of 2008, when my first book came out, and enjoy it more, instead of being kind of overwhelmed by the whole experience. Happily, I'm getting a chance for that with StarCrossed!

Describe your novel in seven words or less?
Kick-@ss girl thief fantasy espionage adventure.

Please share with us about your favorite book and fictional crush to date?
My favorite book in all the world is Peter S. Beagle's amazing ghost story TAMSIN. The book has everything: pitch-perfect voice, a setting you want to retire in, an undercurrent of rising creepiness... all wrapped together in a marvelous human drama with absolutely unforgettable characters. But my fictional crush would have to be Howl, from HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE. Sigh, sigh, sigh.

If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be / Why?
I was never interested at the characters who were already written; I always wanted to be someone new in that world. The secret daughter of Storm Shadow from "GI Joe." The secret daughter of Evil Magician Trent from the Xanth novels by Piers Anthony. (Um, do we see a theme developing?) But if I had to pick somebody, probably Tracy Whitney, the glamorous cat burglar-con artist main character of Sidney Sheldon's If Tomorrow Comes (which my parents let me read at probably far too young an age!).

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play thelead role as you/ Why?
People tell me all the time (unsolicited and apparently entirely without collusion!) that I look like Anne Hathaway. I don't see it, myself, but I'm terribly flattered! Whoever they cast, I hope they give her a cool costume, tall boots, and a sword.

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be – please explain?
Heroine Addict. I'm sure I'm going to regret writing that, but I love the pun, and it's so true! I have always craved stories about strong girls and women, and I always secretly think any story, film, or TV show could be improved by having a female in the lead. (I should point out that I firmly believe heroism comes in all forms, and it doesn't always have to involve a sword. Which is one reason I feature some of my favorite books with all kinds of brave girls and heroines on my website... and also why my own books have heroines just as likely to wield needles or pens as swords.)

How would you describe yourself/life in seven words?
Never has time to take a vacation. No, wait: Author, historical costumer, needlewoman, and dog mom.

Bonus:

**Is there any additional info you would like to share with your readers about what’s next for you and your books?**
I am getting ready to wrap up revisions on the sequel to StarCrossed, Liar's Moon, and I am so excited by how it's turning out. It's going to be awesome. My first novel, A Curse Dark as Gold, was just released in an e-book edition, and comes out in audio next month. I can't wait to listen to actress Charlotte Parry read my Charlotte's words aloud! Guest Post: Sheila Nielson (Author of Forbidden Sea)

I want to thank Sheila Nielson for taking time out to visit my blog and share with readers why she thinks mermaids are so fascinating.

Sheila never did figure out what she wanted to be when she grew up. She graduated from college with a BFA in illustration, has worked as a children's librarian for over twelve and a half years, and would eventually like to be a full-time author. Why pick one career when you can have many? Sheila lives with her two pets, a goffin cockatoo and a tiny toy poodle. She was born and raised in Californa but has come to also love her adopted home in Utah where she currently resides. FORBIDDEN SEA is in stores now!

Why do we find mermaids so fascinating?

The answer to this question is not as simple as it might seem on the surface.

I nearly drowned once when I was young. I remember looking down through the murky green water as I started to go under and realized that I could see no bottom beneath my feet. The lake was so deep, everything below me was hidden from sight. What was down there, far below where my human eyes could not see? Thankfully, I did not end up drowning that day, so I never found out the water’s darkest secrets, but I’ve often wondered if maybe that experience is one of the reasons I’ve always found large bodies of water to be so frightfully fascinating. The world we know ends at the edge of the sea. It is a place we, who breathe the air, are forbidden to go by the very nature of what we are. It is filled with mysteries we know very little about. There could be anything down there—even mermaids. The world of merfolk is an alien but magical place, something most of us can only imagine. We catch glimpses of its haunting beauty in a visit to an aquarium or as we swim in the shallower parts of the ocean, but even then we are but temporary visitors who must eventually return to our world of air—or pay the ultimate price, like I nearly did.

Mermaids are not beholden to such rules. The ocean accepts and embraces them as one of her own. Merfolk may swim down into the sea’s greatest depths and casually discover all her miraculous secrets for themselves. As we read stories about mermaids, we are carried safely with these mythical creatures, fathoms below, to comfortably breathe the icy sea in our lungs and lay eyes on that which is normally forbidden to us. What is more alluring to us mere mortals than the forbidden? There is nothing on the land as majestic and mysterious as whales, nor anything as delicately beautiful as the tiny perfection of a translucent sea horse. What about the ghostlike shipwrecks that once belonged to our world above, but are now beyond our reach forever? The sea has claimed these ships and they will be hers irrevocably until the end of time. Only a mermaid may pay a visit to their empty halls and know the joy of dancing within those splendid rooms once again. If only we could join them there!

Mermaids know all the mysteries of the ocean. By reading about merfolk, we too may come to know the forbidden sea. If you are anything like Adrianne, the main character in my novel, once you have tasted even a small part of it, you may be hesitant to return to the real world again afterward.

Why do we find mermaids so fascinating? I think the real question is, how could we possibly resist them?

Thanks for stopping by Sheila!

Pub. Date: July 2010
Publisher: Scholastic, Inc.
Format: Hardcover, 304pp
Age Range: 12 and up
When Adrianne comes face-to-face with the mermaid of Windwaithe Island, of whom she has heard terrible stories all her life, she is convinced the mermaid means to take her younger sister. Adrianne, fierce-willed and courageous, is determined to protect her sister from the mermaid, and her family from starvation. However, the mermaid continues to haunt Adrianne in her dreams and with her song.

Yet, when the islanders find out about Adrianne's encounters with the mermaid she is scorned, for this small and superstitious community believes the mermaid will bring devastation to the island if Adrianne does not give herself to the sea.

A powerful and lyrical story of one girl who must choose between having everything and having those she loves.

Review: Deception by Lee Nichols

DECEPTION by Lee Nichols
Pub. Date: June 2010
Publisher: Bloomsbury USA
Format: Paperback, 336pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Series: Haunting Emma Series , #1
Source: Publisher
When Emma Vaile's parents leave on mysterious business trip, it gives her the perfect excuse to be a rebellious teen. Throw some parties, get a tattoo (or maybe just a piercing), and enjoy the first few weeks of her junior year. Then her best friend stops talking to her, the cops crash her party, and Emma finds herself in the hands of a new guardian—her college-age "knight in J.Crew armor," Bennett Stern—and on a plane to his museum-like mansion in New England.

After enrolling at Thatcher Academy, Emma settles in by making friends with the popular legacy crowd. But she can't shake the strange visions that are haunting her. She has memories of Thatcher she can't explain, as if she's returning home to a place she's never been. Emma doesn't trust anyone anymore—except maybe Bennett. But he's about to reveal a ghostly secret to Emma. One that will explain the visions . . . and make Emma fear for her life.

I have not read that many ghost books, but DECEPTION surprised me on so many levels. Once Emma is carted off to Maine, that’s when this book kicks into high gear. Emma is one of those characters that you can’t help but love. She’s different of course since she can see ghosts but her personality makes you want to hang out with her. She’s quite independent but vulnerable at the same time. I don’t know how many times I laughed at the things that went on inside Emma’s head. From her crush on heart throb Bennett to her thoughts on the ghosts that surround her, I couldn’t get enough of Emma.

There was one scene in this book that spooked me out so bad, I had goose bumps. I’m not going to say which to keep from being spoilery but it’s enough for anyone to think they belong in a mad house. But Emma is quite mature and handled these strange events in her life pretty well considering the cause. Any ghost story is enough to spook me but DECEPTION is different in the sense that along with Emma being a ghostkeeper and her abilities to see ghost and feel what they felt makes this book unique. I love the ghosts that Emma meets at the Museum. From the handsome rake, to the little urchin boy, to the motherly maid, these characters felt as real as the person standing next to me.

DECEPTION is a great start to a ghostly series filled with lovable characters, mystery, romance, and chilling moments. I can’t wait to see what BETRAYAL, the second installment in this series, has in store for Emma and Bennett. Readers looking for something that keeps you peeking in the shadows at night or just for something different should check out this book.

Sensational 7 Q & A with Jessica Warman (Author of Where the Truth Lies)!

JESSICA WARMAN is also the author of Walker's Breathless. She has an MA in creative writing and studied at prep school and Yale. She is in her twenties, a marathon runner, and a mother of two young girls. She lives in Pennsylvannia.

WHERE THE TRUTH LIES hits shelves September 28, 2010

If you were given a chance to travel back in time, what year or place would you go / Why?
I think I would go back to the year 2000, specifically the summer of 2000. It was the summer after my freshman year of college, and I’d just started dating the man who would later become my husband. I was taking a few creative writing classes for college that summer, and I lived in my first apartment all by myself. All I did was write, go on dates with my husband, and enjoy falling in love. It was probably the best time of my life, and I’d love to revisit it!

Describe your novel in seven words or less?
Secrets and lies unraveling to create chaos.

Please share with us about your favorite book and fictional crush to date?
My favorite book is probably “Infinite Jest” by David Foster Wallace. I truly believe he’s the greatest writer of the 21st century so far. My fictional crush, no question whatsoever, is Del Sugar, the male lead in “Where the Truth Lies.” I’ve written several books about Del that follow his life from his teenage years into adulthood, and I’m completely fascinated by him. He has become almost like a real person to me. I adore him.

If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be / Why?
I think I’d like to be Phoebe, Holden Caulfield’s sister in “Catcher in the Rye.” She’s so fiercely smart, even though she’s just a kid. Plus, I would love to experience having Holden for an older brother!

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play thelead role as you/ Why?
That’s a tough one! Hmmm… I think my favorite actress is Kate Winslet, so maybe her? Although we look nothing alike. I’ve been told I resemble Cameron Diaz, but she seems a lot more outgoing than me. Maybe I’ll leave that one up to a casting agent…

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be – please explain?
Probably “Driven,” or something similar. I’ve never wanted to be anything but a writer, and from high school onward, I spent pretty much all of my free time trying to get published. I’ve been very focused about it.

How would you describe yourself/life in seven words?
Chaotic. Busy. Cynical. Introverted. Excitable. Focused. Sensitive.

Bonus:

**Is there any additional info you would like to share with your readers about what’s next for you and your books?**
Yes! I’m SO excited for the release of my third book, which will be out next year. It’s a thriller, called “Between.” It has quite a few twists and turns, and was an absolute joy to write. It has already been pretty well received – it’s been sold in ten countries! I can’t wait to see how readers respond!

Review: Where the Truth LIes by Jessica Warman

WHERE THE TRUTH LIES by Jessica Warman
Pub. Date: September 2010
Publisher: Walker & Company
Format: Hardcover, 320pp
Source: Publisher
On the surface, Emily Meckler leads the perfect life. She has three best friends, two loving parents, and the ideal setup at the Connecticut prep school where her father is the headmaster. But Emily also suffers from devastating nightmares about fire and water, and nobody knows why. Then the enigmatic Del Sugar enters her life, and Emily is immediately swept away—but her passionate relationship with Del is just the first of many things that aren't quite what they seem in Emily's life. As the lies she's been told start to unravel, Emily must set out to discover the truth regarding her nightmare; on a journey that will lead her to question everything she thought she knew about love, family, and her own idyllic past.

This companion novel to Warman's critically acclaimed Breathless proves that sometimes the biggest lies are told to the people you love the most.
I must admit after reading the synopsis of this book, I was highly intrigued about finding out the deal behind Emily's nightmares. The passionate relationship with Emily and Del turned up the knob on my interest even more.

Once I started reading this book, I found myself wrapped in a whirlwind as Emily tried to navigate around the secrets clouding her life. This book pulled at my heart and I even had a tear or two by the last page. This book is emotionally compelling and Warman's writing drew me deep into the pages and never let up. Being a paranormal book lover, where anything can happen, I tend to shy away from Contemporary novels sometimes because I find it hard to believe in the stories. But with WHERE THE TRUTH LIES, I felt like I knew these characters. Warman did an amazing job with the characters in this book. They felt real and authentic which is something I tend to find missing in so many contemporary novels that I read. If more writers could pull this off, I could find myself falling in love with this genre.

Warman inserts readers into Emily’s psyche as she goes about her day to day activities as the daughter of head master at a boarding school - A boarding school full of prodigies and even students who have been shipped off because of a not so perfect life at home. Right off the bat, I could feel that there was something missing in Emily's life. Even though she had her friends and family with her, I could still sense her longing for something more. Then enter Del Sugar, mysterious & new in a school that's never accepted students after the start of the year. I immediately wanted to know why. And what was Emily's dad keeping from her? When the truth finally came out, I was left speechless. All the lies and cover ups surrounding Emily's life is enough to make anyone question the actions by the characters involved.

WHERE THE TRUTH LIES weaves all the mysteries about decisions one would make to protect a loved one, while trying to hold onto a future that could lead to disaster if the truth came out into a beautiful story of forgiveness and second chances. This book is the companion novel to BREATHLESS, and it makes me want to go read it right now. I'm looking forward to reading more books by Jessica Warman.

Review: Crusade by Nancy Holder & Debbie Viguié

Pub. Date: September 2010
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
Format: Hardcover, 470pp
Age Range: Young Adult
Series: Crusade, #1
Source: Publisher

The ultimate battle. The ultimate love.

For the past two years, Jenn has lived and trained at Spain’s Sacred Heart Academy Against the Cursed Ones. She is among the few who have pledged to defend humanity or die trying. But the vampires are gaining power, and the battle has only just begun.

Forced to return home after death takes a member of her family, Jenn discovers that San Francisco is now a vampire strong-hold. As a lone hunter apart from her team, Jenn is isolated—and at risk. She craves the company of her fighting partner, Antonio: his protection, his reassurance, his touch. But a relationship with Antonio comes with its own dangers, and the more they share of themselves, the more Jenn stands to lose.

Then Jenn is betrayed by one who was once bound to protect her, causing her to doubt all she had held as true. To survive, Jenn must find the courage to trust herself—and her heart.

CRUSADE is a fast paced and action-packed read filled with deadly enemies around every turn. This book is so different from most of the vampire books I read. Most of the vampires you typically read about stay hidden from humans, but the Cursed Ones as they are called have pretty much taken over in the human world. They still have the same strengths and weaknesses that you read about. It's the fact that these vampires are scary. They're not all sparkly and animal blood drinkers - nothing to romanticize about these vamps at all.

This book wastes no time pulling readers right into the war against vampires as the Salamanca Hunters fight to the death to rid a small village of their deadly enemy. The characters in CRUSADE come from a wide range of backgrounds and powers. I was intrigued about their training and the pairing up of each hunter to keep each other safe. Each character is unique, but Jenn, the main protagonist is probably the weakest link but the more relatable for it. When the team suspects a leak in their midst, things go wiry, then Jenn finds herself trying to navigate around without the protection of her team when she has to make visit back home. Ah Antonio, the mystery he holds. I wanted to uncover all of his secrets. As with Jenn, you couldn't help falling for him. What's unique about this series is the readers get to experience the lives of all the characters. Hunters, the Resistance, and Vampires. Then all of a sudden you might find yourself enchanted with the characters lives, and you want to know more about their background history. I enjoyed each and every character in this book. After I finished this book, there was nothing I could come up with that I didn’t like about this book. NADA. Great writing and unforgettable characters makes this book pack one helluva punch. I was so engrossed with this book that I did not want to part with it.

CRUSADE is a great start to an exciting new vampire series. I don't think I could ever get tired of vampires, especially with CRUSADE since it's so different from other YA vampire books. Once you start reading this book, you don't want to put it down. It's a nonstop rollercoaster ride that you'd want to take over and over again.
