Sensational 7 Q & A with Kersten Hamilton (Author of Tyger Tyger)!

Have you ever wanted to know what it would be like to hang out with your favorite author(s)? In an attempt to get a better understanding of authors, my Sensational Seven Q & A takes a closer or more personal look at these authors to give you a glimpse of the personalities behind the writing of your favorite books.

“Talent alone cannot make a writer. There must be a man behind the book; a personality which, by birth and quality, is pledged to the doctrines there set forth, and which exists to see and state things so, and not otherwise.” By Ralph Waldo Emerson

Kersten Hamilton is a prolific children's writer known for her fast-paced, dramatic storylines. She is the author of twenty-four books for children and works with the house church movement in her home town of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

TYGER TYGER is in stores today!

If you were given a chance to travel back in time, what year or place would you go / Why?
I would travel back in time 200 million years into the Jurassic, and live among the dinosaurs the way Jane Goodall lived among the apes—because I would love to study the beasts.

Describe your novel in seven words or less?
Epic. Celtic mythology, urban fantasy, and romance!

Please share with us about your favorite book and fictional crush to date?
I couldn’t possibly choose a favorite book. It changes at the speed of thought, which is only slightly less than the speed of light! Before I could type the title, it would have changed.

But literary crush I can do. I once took a test to find out which of the characters from Harry Potter I should marry—and it turned out that I should marry the Weasley twins. Both of them. At once. And, if you took Fred and George and put them in a blender, you could come up with something remarkably like my husband Mark. Yep. I would be safe in saying that Fred/George is my literary crush!

If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be / Why?
Reepicheep from Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Last Battle, by C.S. Lewis, NOT the one from the movie. I have always felt a great kinship with that mouse.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play thelead role as you/ Why?
Johnny Depp. Dustin Hoffman could have done it at one time, but he has grown a teeny bit too crotchety to play the part of Kersten Hamilton.

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be – please explain?
"I Feer a Dere”

Because that is the first line of the first poem I ever wrote. I was six years old, and living in the wilds of Alaska. Even then, I knew I wanted to be a writer. (In retrospect, it would have been more sensible to fear a bear or a mountain lion, but I was reaching for the stars. I wanted rhyme.) I Feer a Dere would be the story of my struggle with dysgraphia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dysgraphia and achieving my dream in spite of it.

How would you describe yourself/life in seven words?
Lucky to be alive, all things considered.

Bonus:

**Is there any additional info you would like to share with your readers about what’s next for you and your books?**
Yes! I am just putting the finishing touches on In the Forests of the Night, book two of Goblin Wars. It is darker, scarier, and the stakes are much higher for Tea and Finn. I am loving these characters. :)

Thanks for stopping by Kersten!

  7. Great interview! Loved the travel back in time answer. I mean aside from worrying about being eaten, how awesome would it be to see real dinosaurs!

  8. You know, I just watched Ice Age and I was thinking the same thing about living with dinosaurs. It would be awesome to find out more about that time.
